With the 2015 regular season coming to a close, many teams are looking forward to April 30th. On that date, teams will get the chance to revamp their offenses and defenses. I’m going to focus on the top 5 drafters today, which will be the Titans, Browns, Chargers, Cowboys and Jaguars. Unfortunately, the Titans and Jaguars were both in the top 5 for drafting last year yet their teams have improved a little if any. The Browns, Chargers and Cowboys all had picks outside of the top ten last year, but struggled this season. Without further ado, let’s look at what each team needs to do.
- Tennessee Titans
Top needs:
Offensive Lineman, Running Back, Linebacker
Best Selection choices:
Laremy Tunsil- Offensive Tackle: Ole Miss
Ezekiel Elliot- Running Back: Ohio State
Reggie Ragland- Inside Linebacker: Alabama
Overview: The Titans have a lot of issues to fix, but if they want to take the best step possible they will want to get a bell-cow offensive lineman who can protect their young franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota. A running back would be an effective pick as this seasons carries were split between Dexter McCluster and Bishop Sankey so the Titans could use a tailback. They have plenty of linebackers, but they could use and upgrade.
- Cleveland Browns
Top needs:
Quarterback, Wide Receiver, Defensive End
Best Selection Choices:
Connor Cook- Quarterback: Michigan State
Laquan Treadwell- Wide Receiver: Ole Miss
Joey Bosa- Defensive End: Ohio State
Overview: The Browns haven’t had a legitimate franchise quarterback since Otto Graham in the 1940’s! At some point they have to figure it out. The Browns had a good receiver in Josh Gordon a few years back who was an all pro until his drug problems caught up with him and he hasn’t been in the league in almost 2 years. The Browns defense is average at best, but they could use a dominant pass rusher to add to that defensive line.
- San Diego Chargers
Top Needs:
Wide Receiver, Linebacker, Center
Top Selection Choices:
Laquan Treadwell- Wide Receiver: Ole Miss
Myles Jack- Outside Linebacker: UCLA
Center- Ryan Kelly- Alabama
Overview: The Chargers are one of those teams that always seem to have a good season, but they can’t get over the hump. They need a Wide Receiver to pair up with Keenan Allen to create a high powered offense with Philip Rivers as the quarterback. The defense needs help and they need an athletic linebacker line Myles Jack who can help any team. But they really need a middle of the line guy who can protect Philip Rivers.
- Dallas Cowboys
Top Needs:
Quarterback, Cornerback, Defensive Line
Top Selection Choice:
Connor Cook- Quarterback: Michigan State
Jalen Ramsey- Cornerback: Florida State
A’Shawn Robinson- Defensive Tackle: Alabama
Overview: Cowboys fans are confident that with Romo behind Center they can win next season, but they need a backup for when Romo calls it quits. They need to draft now and breed him into their system. Ramsey would be my first pick to help this Cowboys swiss cheese secondary. And they really need a D-line threat and A’Shawn Robinson is big and fast and very talented.
- Jacksonville Jaguars
Top Needs:
Cornerback, Defensive End, Center
Top Selection Choices:
Jalen Ramsey- Cornerback: Florida State
Joey Bosa- Defensive End: Ohio State
Ryan Kelly- Center- Alabama
Overview: The Jaguars improved their offense drastically but they could certainly use a Center to help with protection. Their defense should be a top priority and Jalen Ramsey and Joey Bosa would definitely help with their cause.
So there ya go an overview of the 2016 NFL draft. Let’s hope these teams use the opportunities they get.
