Cooperstown is home to about 1900 people and the extremely famous basesball Hall of Fame. The baseball hall of fame is not only home to some the greatest athletes of all time and is one of the hardest halls to get into historically. Some great names in baseball history have been denied a trip into the hall including seven time Cy Young award winner Roger Clemens and 5 time MVP Barry Bonds. However this year two more men were elected into the hall and they certainly deserved it.
Ken Griffey Jr.- “the kid” is the greatest player to ever wear a Seattle Mariners jersey. He is one of only 7 players to ever hit 600+ home runs (630). He finished with 1868 RBIs, 184 stolen bases and a .284 batting average. Ken Griffey Jr. was the youngest player to be selected to MLB’s all century team, which was a team compiled of the greatest players prior to the year 2000. Jr. is also part of one of the most interesting feats in baseball history when he and his father hit a homerun in the same game. Jr. set the record for the highest % of acceptance in history with 99.3% of the vote, only 3 ballots were left without his name on it. He was also the 1997 MVP with a .304 batting average 56 homeruns and 147 RBI. Jr. definitely deserves to be in the hall.
Mike Piazza - This man will certainly go down as the greatest hitting catcher of all time. Mike finished with a .308 batting average, and a catchers record 427 homeruns and 1335 RBI’s. Piazza was a part of a Mets team who went to the World Series in 2000. He is the latest draft pick in the hall of fame, he was drafted in the 62nd round and became a Cinderella story when he got a chance with the Dodgers and eventually made a career for himself. The thing that has been holding him back over the last few years from getting into the hall was drug use speculation. He was presumed to have taken performance enhancing drugs for years and his chances of getting into the hall were plummeting. However, this year the voters overlooked it because no one presented proof and he got 83% of the vote.
It’s interesting because Griffey is the highest draft pick in the hall of fame as the 1st pick and Piazza is the lowest in the 62nd round. Have any players that you think were robbed? Comment your thoughts below!
