Booker Elementary Fire

On November 5, a small fire had to be put out in Booker Elementary. The fire started because a student brought a lighter to school and set the girls bathroom on fire. The student intentionally lit her binder on fire and threw it in the trashcan. The trashcan was soon engulfed in flames and the fire alarms were set off by a smoke detector. The school's Vice Principal extinguished the fire before the fire department could get there. The children had to evacuate the building and went to Spratley Gifted Center where the principal graciously put on a movie for the students to watch in the auditorium. The children stayed at Spratley through lunch. Finally, at 1:45, the students and teachers were allowed back into Booker and dismissal proceeded as usual. Business will continue as usual tomorrow morning.

Heritage High Lockdown

There have been multiple shootings and bomb threats concerning Heritage High School in Hampton, VA. The school was on a full lockdown the whole day last week. The threats first swept through the social media realm, causing numerous students to not show up to school.  While some people were joking around with the threats, it was clear that others were serious. Thankfully, due to the efforts of local police and school administrators, no attacks occurred. Whether these reports were all jokes or not, making threats like these is simply unacceptable. No one deserves to live in fear, especially of a supposedly “safe place” like high school. What do you think? Comment below!

1-264 Shooting

The I-264 shooting happened on Saturday, when three young men were arrested for an early morning shooting on Interstate 264 in Virginia beach. Trooper I.K Ibrahim heard a sound of a gunfire while on patrol near the I-64/I-264 interchange around 1:40 a.m Friday morning. A mysterious vehicle traveling east on 1-64 refused to stop, but after a brief pursuit, the vehicle finally stopped along the eastbound lanes of I-64 near Greenbrier Parkway. The driver of the mysterious vehicle, 25 year old Stefan Idele of Newport News, was charged with carrying a weapon, shooting from a motor vehicle, and driving with a suspended license. But he wasn't alone. There were two other passengers with him, Charles Weeks and Chadon Burton, both of whom were charged with shooting from a motor vehicle. All three were booked in the Virginia Beach City Jail without bail and declined interviews. The incident remains under investigation after the discovery of two handguns. Although there were no injuries from the shooting, the three boys will still be made to serve time.  What do you think? Comment below!

The Supermoon

No witches or aliens were seen on Sunday night/Monday morning. Disappointing, but attention to the sky was captured instead by the large red moon. The Supermoon Eclipse was over everyone's head September 28 and 29. People from the UK, India, Argentina, and Mexico got a terrific view but some countries like Australia and Chile, not so much. Due to where the countries are located, the moon wasn't as visible to them, and therefore missed the spectacular moon. Others, like here in VA, were unable to see the great display due to a thick cover of clouds that didn’t dissipate until morning. Which sucks, because the moon won't be seen again until 2033.
The science behind it? The Supermoon Eclipse occurs because a new moon (the fully covered black moon) or a full moon (fully enlightened moon) is the closest it can be to the Earth. The moon is stereotypically 238,900 miles away, but that night, it was only 236,000 miles away. That's only one factor, the second is that the Earth, Moon, and sun are all in line. Once both factors, have occurred, people can see the red Supermoon. For all those who missed it, people have been sharing their pictures from the Super Bloodmoon on social media for the past week, so go live vicariously through them! What did you think? Comment your Super Blood Moon stories below!

New Home, New Hope

What if everyone in a community came together to help a man in need? What if that community was willing to work for just the sole motive of helping another in need? The what if turned into reality, when sailors and neighbors came to help out Nick Salter.

Naval Petty Officer Nick Salter has stage four skin cancer that has gotten progressively worse since 2007. His family supports him as much as they can, but with two mortgages and the medical bills, a foreclosure would have been the last straw to a humongous pile. Salter's family has been trying to sell their Chesapeake house for the last five months, but due to jobs and appointments, keeping the house 'Home and Garden' pretty has been on the back burner. His friends and fellow sailors went to the house and began the house transformation. WAVY TV 10 conducted an interview with Salter and the volunteers on August 25. The incredible thing is that a couple weeks later, WAVY 10 conducted another interview on September 10. The reporters found out that volunteers have flocked to the house and yard, "at one point almost 200 volunteers." Roofing and painting companies have also responded by giving free service. An entire community full of kind people and businesses found the motivation to help one in need, and the need is still being met.
