Black History Month is extremely important to me. From a very young age, I was taught to appreciate not only my skin but the people who fought and died for my right to get an education. Black people have done so much for this country and they deserve to be appreciated. But, as I’ve gotten older, Black History is mentioned less and less. We talk so much about old Caucasian men and how they made our country great but what about the people who were dragged here against their will and still managed to make a difference. When did Martin Luther King Day just become another day off from school? When did Black History Month start getting ignored? Why are the accomplishments of Black people ignored or simply not mentioned? This should not be something that needs to be requested. It should merely be taught out of respect to the amazing men and women who changed this country for the better.
