I personally don't mind a latte every now and then but I am friends with plenty of coffee addicts. Maybe at first the taste of coffee was appealing, but i've watched them guzzle cup after cup just to function in the morning. It’s extremely painful to watch them shake and then slump over after the crash hits. With the pressure of college and the heavy work load from both dual-enrollment and regular classes, it can be hard to stay awake in class. If you are a student athlete, I'm praying for you, honestly. It isn't easy trying to juggle so much and then come to school at 8 am.
Coffee has been made available to us through Starbucks, other fast food chains, and even our own families. They may seem like the obvious solution to sleepiness since sugar and caffeine give you temporary energy, but coffee and caffeine aren't made to be consumed daily. Sustained amounts of coffee and stress make a deadly combination. Every time you need to stay awake or need to get work accomplished you grab a cup of coffee. At first you can feel it working; eventually, however, without your coffee fix you become a raging withdrawal monster. I think the obvious solution would be to lessen the amount of stress and pressure we put on students, but since life is stress and is basically unavoidable we need to limit coffee intake. I'm not saying it's Starbucks’ job to cut anyone off but as fellow students we can help each other. One thing that I know helps wake me up is washing my face in the morning. Another way could be drinking a cold drink. Maybe a delicious fruit beverage such as orange juice (though personally that could kill me) or apple juice. Maybe instead of eating and goofing off during free time, take a nap so you will at least get some rest. These solutions aren’t foolproof, but they could at least help students to stop running on fumes. What do you think? Have any strong convictions about coffee and stress? Comment them below!
