The Skin I'm In

No one chose to look the way they do. We are all just a result of our environment and our ancestors DNA. Each of us uniquely beautiful in our own way. No two people truly look the exact same. That is the beauty of humanity. We are all different. Instead of embracing and celebrating that which makes us special, some people try to let it divide us.

As an African american, race has always been an important topic in my life. My mother often reminded me as a little girl how beautiful my skin was and told me how proud i should be of my heritage. It didn't make sense to me then, because why would I ever not love the way i looked? But time passed and as I got older I learned that each person has their own standards for beauty. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. I learned too young that not everyone thought the way  looked was beautiful.

I have had to learn to accept that my thick curly hair would never be perfectly straight. I had to learn my lips and thighs would be a little bigger than some other girls. My skin would be darker than some people’s and that isn't a bad thing.

I hope that the future generation can learn to love each other based on who they are as people instead of what’s on the outside. Being a good person has to matter more than ridiculous standards of beauty. It’s going to take more than wishful thinking and kind words to make a change happen. People have to change. I’m not sure if it’s possible. But I have to hope that my generation can help influence the next into becoming better human beings.
