Song Of the Week

Let’s be honest. Christian music has a tendency to be, frankly, pretty boring. We’re stuck with two options: slow soulful music, or TobyMac. As normal teenagers with opinions and our own thoughts;  those two choices don’t really appeal to us and we have a tendency to shun the label of “Christian.” This weekly post is here to prove that Christian music can be so much more!

Song of the Week: Brother ft. Gavin Degraw by needtobreathe

This week’s song is by the Christian southern rock band needtobreathe, featuring famous pop singer Gavin Degraw. With its melodic verses and anthem like chorus, this single continues to climb the charts of both Christian and secular music.

We “Heart Eyes” the New Snapchat Update!!

Recently, social media took a turn for the better when Snapchat released an unexpected update. The app’s staff added options like “travel mode”, which reduces the amount of data you use when you aren’t connected to wifi. They also made several aesthetic changes like removing the seconds display in the corner of story view. However, everyone can agree that the most noticed part of the update was the animations display. In addition to normal features like speed, height, and other filters; you can also add video animations to your Snaps. Choose from a daily rotating display of heart eyes, monster masks, or teary eyes; and send the best ones to your friends or post them to your stories. Here are some of our staff’s top picks!

What do you think? Comment your favorite animation below, or post it on social media and tag us!

The Good, Bad, and the Ugly: Jailbreaking Exposed

Jailbreaking an iPhone. This hack is considered a legend in the phone community. We all know people who have jailbroken their phones. Let’s be honest, we’ve all coveted those pretty cool apps and functions they can do. BUt we’ve also heard the horror stories. Here are some pros and cons of jailbreaking so you can make a more “informed” decision about your phone’s future.
Let's start off with the great things that comes with jailbreaking!
Pro #1. Free apps
After having had my phone jailbroken for an hour, I was dying to see what it could do. One of the first things that I discovered was that I would be able to get free apps! Getting paid apps for free is a really feature, so if I want something I can get it without money coming out of my pocket. This is a great feature that opens countless possibilities!
Pro #2. Endless amounts of features
With jailbreaking you can get a lot of features to make your phone look and act more appealing. The features include things like video pane, which allows you to popout youtube videos into a little window on your phone. Another basic feature that you should download is cylinder, which changes the transitions between pages on the home screen. My favorite feature is video wallpapers; video wallpapers allow you to set a gif as your lock and home screen.
Pro #3. Free music
This is the greatest part behind jailbreaking, I have been able to listen to Spotify without ads, and download the songs straight from Spotify for free. Out of everything available cause of jailbreaking, free music is the greatest feature. If you haven’t jailbroken your Iphone, free music is the reason to.
Now, the bad part of jailbreaking.
Con # 1. Voids the warranty of your device
When you jailbreak your iDevice it voids the warranty, so if something were to happen to your device they will not replace it or even try to fix it. Although, there are ways around it, it can cause complications in the long run.
Con #2. Risk of viruses
Like many other things that overwrites software, it comes with a chance of viruses. Recently the risk of viruses has increased . I had a virus that made the screen go black and white, and I couldn’t fix this even with the settings. Another issue I had was that it crashed my phone, which had to be restored to its’ factory settings in order to be fixed.

Con #3. More likely to get hacked
Almost a quarter million IPhone have been hacked after being jailbroken. Another unfortunate things is that jailbreaking your phone can also allow people to access its built in features like the camera. This may not bother you, but just think about all the information people can get from your phone, like where you live, or even more important information like credit card numbers.
Well there you have it, both the good and the bad of jailbreaking your iphone. Overall jailbreaking is a really nice thing that allows access to limitless features, but it also can give access to hackers. Even with all of the pros and cons, it’s pretty much a toss up whether a not jailbreaking your iphone would be worth it for you. So what do you think? Comment Your opinions below!

Trend Watch: Create Your Own Aesthetic

Aesthetic. Any second -rate teacher should be able to give a pretty correct definition. However, for those who don't have a photographic memory of their seventh grade vocab list, webster's dictionary defines aesthetics as " a concern with beauty or the appreciation of beauty." While it's not a word you hear often, its popularity has grown due to a recent trend on the blogging website Tumblr. The idea is extremely simple. All you need are several pictures and a collage app. The only rule: all of the pictures must describe your subject. While the idea started as a way to use art to describe favorite fictional characters or seasons, it has slowly turned into a trend. More and more people are using it to create an "aesthetic" that completely describes them.
Here's an example. These are some aesthetics of the perfect fall.

Got the idea? Great, now try it for yourself!! Grab a collage and couple of your favorite pics. Like the result? Post it on social media and tag us!!

Emmys Highlights

The 67th annual Primetime Emmy awards was a blast. Actor/Comedian Andy Samberg was the host of the Emmys. Between awards, Samberg kept the crowd laughing the entire night. However, even with the amazing host, the Emmy viewers hit an all time low of 11.9 million viewers. Last years Emmys had over 15 million viewers. It marks the second year in a row that the Emmys viewers have decreased since the 17.9 million record of 2013. Some of the biggest awards went out to “Game of Thrones” for most Outstanding Drama series. The TV show “Modern Family” has been on a streak for winning the Comedy Series but this year “Veep” took the emmy home with them.
An unexpected touching moment took place when former “30 Rock” star Tracy Morgan walked onstage. This marked one of his first public appearances since last year’s highway accident, which left him with brain damage. After receiving a standing ovation, Morgan gave a really touching but also funny speech. “ I’m standing on my own two feet… I am honored to back here at the Emmys. I suffered a traumatic brain injury that put me in the hospital for eight days, and when I regained consciousness I was ecstatic to learn that I was not the one who was messed up,” he joked. Clearly both he and his sense of humor are back.

However, one of the greatest highlights of the Emmy’s was Viola Davis’ win for Best Actress in a Drama. As the first African American to win the award, Davis went on to deliver a powerful and poignant speech about diversity and her experiences in the media, to which she received another standing ovation.  Overall, the Emmy’s were filled with both humorous and heartfelt moments that were worth more than the viewers it received. Running out of Time

It’s always been a struggle to get to class on time. Students are given exactly 4 minutes to leave one classroom, collect their books, and make it to the next class in time for the bell. With whatever time left, you can forget even trying to go the restroom, or having any real conversations with your friends. Even after all of that, you still have to maneuver through the chattering seventh graders, the mobs of slow walking students, and the chaotic traffic jam that we call the stairwell. While some periods are definitely easier than others, there is a constant trend of rushing from long distances, inevitably leading to students forgetting books, papers, or other important materials. This adds an important lesson to our homework: devising a path to get to class. I can still remember times where the only way I could make it to class on time was if I carried all my books with me. Other students actually got multiple book bags to place strategically around the school.
Things get even more complicated at lunch. Getting from the lunchroom to the fifth period classrooms is almost impossible, especially with classes held upstairs. As a senior, my schedule’s  travel difficulty between classes has decreased somewhat. However, this year has brought up a new problem. As seniors,  we have the privilege to go off campus for lunch on Wednesday. It sounds great until lunch time became shorter. Not only that, this year we have not been able to leave our classrooms early before lunch. It’s not easy to leave class, sign out, drive to get the food, come back, eat and get to our fifth period class without being late.
I understand that schedules are pre-made in order to fit the requirements for class time. However, it is common knowledge that the schedules are not set in stone. Chapel and other functions like assemblies or meetings constantly change the schedule of our day. While it would require some work, adding at least 2 minutes to our time between classes would help tremendously.

Facing a Giant

Hampton Christian’s Volleyball team took a trip to Peninsula Catholic for a non-conference scrimmage on Friday night.  The Peninsula Catholic Knight’s are ranked as the 21st best volleyball team in Virginia and have only lost 3 games, so going into this matchup looked like a giant challenge for our Lady Warriors. During the first two sets the games were not so pretty as Peninsula Catholic won 25-4, and 25-7; however, game three saw our Warriors put up a strong fight in a 25-14 loss. Even with the odds stacked against them the lady warriors never gave up and fought till the very end.
Warriors MVP Renee Denny finished with 2 digs, 1 block and 0 serve errors.
When asked what the team could have done better, she replied “We could have gotten off to a better start.” Head coach Sanci Hall said afterwards that she was “very proud of the team and that they have improved so much since week 1.” I can’t wait to see what our ladies will do Monday night at 6:30 against Summit Christian, be there and support your Warriors. I’m really starting to “dig” how the warriors are playing.

Five ways IOS 9 has improved Apple Products

On the 16th IOS 9 was released, and with it came some great new features. Here are some of the new features that make IOS 9 a substantial update.
  1. Always On Hey SIRI
If you tend to use SIRI as means of finding information, play specific songs, or sending replies to texts, you will be happy to know that you can now just say “Hey SIRI” without being plugged in to access the AI assistant. I see this being useful to people that travel a lot, because they can use their phone without having to touch it, which might stop distracted driving.
  1. Multi-Tasking for IPads
I like to do multiple things at a time, I type up papers while watching YouTube, and now on my IPad I can look at posts on Instagram and watch YouTube. If you’re like me then multitasking is now made easy on the IPad with IOS 9.
  1. Better Notes
This is my favorite thing included with IOS 9, now I can draw stick people on my notes just to do it. Along with the inclusion of drawing on notes you can add photos, links, and have checklists. With this I’m going to be using notes a lot more just to draw what I think.

  1. AD Block
In Safari, you can now have all advertisements disabled. Being a Chrome user I think most people will consider switching to Safari to not be interrupted by advertisements. This is by far the best thing in the IOS 9 update and I encourage the  use of Safari for AD Block
  1. Hide Photos
Now I know mentioning this makes it seems like it’s helping some people hide inappropriate or unsavory photos, but there are actually many helpful things this function can do. From hiding surprises from your friends to photos of sensitive information, the hide photo option gives users a useful and easy way to keep things secure.
There is a lot more included in the update, but those I mentioned were my top 5 favorite things. What was your favorite feature? What was the worst? Comment your thoughts below!!

Warriors Verses Portsmouth Volleyball Game

This Tuesday, the Hampton Christian Warriors Volleyball team faced off against the Portsmouth Patriots on the Warriors home court. While their current record may not be the greatest, the Warriors have shown true resolve as they battle through their season. This game truly showed their commitment to never giving up. From the very first play, it was very apparent that this was going to be an extremely fast paced game. The Warriors put up an amazing first match, with both great plays and an even better attitude. Sophomore Emma Keller was on fire with six impressive blocks. While the varsity team fought hard, the match ended 25-20 in Portsmouth’s favor. The second and third match were equally impressive, with the Warriors showing an amazing amount of toughness, commitment, and resilience. While the last two matches ended 25-12, the extreme amount of hard work the players put into the matches was easy to see. The Lady Warriors played an amazing game and should continue to be proud as they proceed with the rest of their season. Keep coming out and supporting the Team!!!!

Brady’s Return

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots kicked off the regular season with a 28-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers last Thursday night. The NFL and Tom Brady have been in an ongoing feud over the infamous deflate gate back in February.  Brady was initially given a 4 game suspension; however, he was allowed to play the preseason. He struggled in the preseason due to the distractions of the court cases against the NFL. 2 weeks ago, Judge Richard Berman ruled in favor of Tom Brady and the 4 game suspension was lifted.

Following the ruling, suspense began for build for Brady’s return. As the game drew closer, it was widely agreed upon that Brady had one of two outcomes in the game, The first thought was that he would struggle greatly from the distractions of “deflategate”. The second thought, was that Brady would come back stronger than ever. As sports analyst ,Rich Eisen, said “ Tom Brady will embark on the greatest revenge tour of all time.” Fortunately, the first outcome proved the winner in the end, as Tom stayed strong and decimated the Steelers defense. finished the game with 288 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. At one point Brady completed 19 straight passes,  3 away from setting the NFL record.  With this outstanding performance, Tom showed all those watching that is far from over. Looks to me like Tom Brady is not “throwing” in the towel and will finish with a great season.

One of Our Very Own

Tyrod Taylor, who graduated from Hampton High School, had his first start with the NFL team, the Buffalo Bills, this weekend and had an amazing game. He started over the Bills former first round pick, EJ Manuel, and over the great veteran, Matt Cassel, after a preseason quarterback competition. Taylor played against the Indianapolis Colts and he earned the win for the Bills. The Bills beat the Colts 27-14. He threw 14 out of 19 completed passes and threw over 195 yards with one touchdown.

Soccer Team Wins Again!

Tuesday September 8th our varsity soccer team put a beat down on the Alliance Christian Falcons. After a 1-2 start the Warriors came together and overcame the Falcons 6-1. Our warriors were led to victory by our talented 8th grade class. Dawson Guzik, Will Birch and Pierce Carpenter all finished with 2 goals.
Another shout out goes to junior James Wilkinson. James plays goalie and almost had a shutout, but he gave up a goal with around fifteen minutes left. Afterward Coach Parris said “I’m glad our team is coming together. It feels like they’re really starting to get. God willing, we’ll have a great year.” Looks to me like our soccer team is “kicking” off the season right.

New Additions to the Hampton Christian Teaching Staff

Hampton Christian Academy has gained several new teachers this school year. These new teachers include; Mrs. Norton (Drama), Mrs Breyer (Mathematics), Mr. Brickhouse (History, Government, World Religions, Journalism, English), Mrs Brickhouse (Economics, P.E.), Mrs. Santiago (Spanish), Mrs. Gorcia (Physics, Mathematics), and Mrs. Black (music). Each of these teachers bring a new light and a new perspective to Hampton Christian.
Mrs. Norton, who used to be the Greek Life Coordinator at Radford University said that her favorite thing about teaching is, “when the light comes on, when students learn something new that they didn't know yesterday.” Mrs. Norton is also excited to see what God will do through the performing arts class this year.     When asked what her favorite thing about teaching is Mrs. Breyer said, “ I love the interaction with the students , especially seeing when they get it.”
Mr. Brickhouse came to be a teacher at Hampton Christian after being coach of the varsity basketball team in the 2024-2015 school year. He said, “I wanted to be a more important piece of the Hampton Christian community.” Mr. Brickhouse is most excited for this years basketball season and a chance to reinvigorate the schools’ sense of spirit.
Out of all the changes made at Hampton Christian this year, students seem to be especially loving the new teacher additions!

Why New Students Chose HCA

What makes Hampton Christian Academy great? Is it the athletes? Is it the teachers? Is it the young principal we have?  No, it is the growing student body. Each year, we have more new students coming in for many different reasons. For example, sixth grader Gabriel Banzinger said he came to this school because he wanted to learn more about Christ. Connor Kennedy, an eighth grader, said his other school would not work with him on holding him back so that he could get better grades, but we did.

Some of the new students, like Will in eighth grade have said our school is a lot smaller then his old school. Even though we may be a small school, we are big in our love and care for new students. We will continue to grow in size and our love for Jesus Christ.

Apple Event

On September 9, Apple held a special event, showing off all of the new products that they will be bringing to the table this year.
Apple opened up the event with its brand new smart watch. Apple had released its first ever smart watch earlier this year, but now they know how a smart watch should behave. The new watch will feature a new operating system, with new watch faces, 3rd party complications that will display news, calendar events, and other applications. New apps and features with the watch include a translator, and a GoPro camera feature. The Apple Watch contains a newly advanced health care app, Airstrip. The app will allow communication between a doctor and patient. The best thing this app offers is that now pregnant women can check their baby’s heart rate. Along with the new watch operating system, comes two new design colors, gold and rose gold, as well as some new band styles and colors, like the new leather band by Hermes. The new Apple Watch shipped out the day of the event, and it's operating system is going to be available on the 16th.

Next in the lineup were iPads with the brand new iPad Pro, that is stocked up with many great advances than previous iPads. The biggest being its size with a 12.9 inch retina display that has 5.6 million pixels. The powerhouse behind the iPad pro is the new A9X chip, which is double the performance of the A8X chip. The A9X is so powerful that it is compared to that of a PC. With a brand new chip and better graphics, reviews say the IPad Pro is greater than most laptops made this year.

Brand new features, only available on the new IPad, are physical keyboards to type on and the Apple Pencil. The pencil acts as a stylus, but has a finer point that will not scratch the screen, but can also draw realistic thin lines like a normal pencil. Apple Pencil allows the user to draw on the notes app and on mail. The pencil will be charged by plugging directly into the IPad Pro. Applications that will utilize the keyboard and the stylus include Microsoft Office and Adobe apps specifically made for the IPad Pro. The IPad will be equipped with 4 speakers and a 10 hour battery life, so you can get the best out of your experience. The IPad Pro will be available in November this year, with a starting price of $799.
Apple then introduced its new Apple TV. It is equipped with greater hardware, an A8 chip, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, Ethernet, and also includes the App Store. The Apple TV will have a new operating system TVOS, and a new remote that has a touch surface. It can last up to 3 months on one charge. Another featur allows you to press a button that will allow you to talk to Siri and have her search for tv shows across every video application. Siri has been given an upgrade on Apple TV, now she can search for specific actors featured in shows and movies. The App Store will be available for use on the Apple TV along with many great apps such as Disney infinity and Guitar hero. The Apple TV will be available late October 2015, with the 32GB for $149 and the 64GB for only $199.

The next thing to be featured is the popular product the IPhone, specifically the new IPhone 6s. Within the works of the IPhone 6s is the new A9 chip that is 70% faster than the A8 chip. The feature 'Hey Siri' got a change as well, now you don’t have to be plugged in to have they app on. The assistant that we’ve come to love will always be listening. A new feature that the 6S will have is 3D Touch, which will enable new touch gestures that will make tasks such as finding directions, opening emails, and looking at photos easier. The camera on the IPhone 6s is a 12MP iSight camera that will deliver beautiful images and a flash 3x better than the previous iPhones. Videos can be taken at 60 frames per second and can be edited on the phone. Photos on the IPhone will bring back memories by live photos that will show a short segment of time while the photo was taken. Also, Android users, who would want to change to iPhones, will be able to transfer information, like contacts, to the new phone.

The phone will be made of a stronger aluminum that can withstand a lot weight without bending, as well as a strongerglass screen. It will have a 4.7 inch screen and the IPhone 6s plus with a 5.5 inch display. Along with the new phone comes a new aluminum finish and rose gold color, that will be available with the pre-existing gold, silver, and space grey options. The IPhone 6s, along with its many features such as 3D touch, stronger materials, new chip, better touch ID, the fastest Wi-Fi and LTE on the market, 12MP camera, 4K videos, 5MP HD FaceTime camera, and Live Photos, is the best phone that is currently available.
Most phone service companies don’t offer a 2 year contract, so Apple has a new pricing system of $27 and $31 a month for the new IPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Another payment option, the IPhone Upgrade Program, starts at $32 a month which will allow users to get a new IPhone each year upon release of the next new phone. his also includes Apple Care. Pre-Orders for the IPhone 6s and 6s Plus can be made starting September 12th, and the IPhone 6s will be available on the 25th.
Last but not least, Apple announced that IOS 9 will be available for download on the 16th this September. This year, Apple has announced the greatest everyday technology, and has really gone out of its way to give people the best that they can, with new watches, TVs, tablets, and phones. Apple has taken a bite out of greatness.

Dress Code

The topic of dress code is common among students. At one point or another, we've all had to check the handbook to see if our favorite outfit was against dress code. While fortunately we don't have to wear uniforms (for example, we can wear jeans while other schools must wear khakis), there are still quite a few rules that seem too strict.
While I understand there are some T-shirts that promote non-Christian things or images, there are a good number of t-shirts that are innocent. If the images are the problem, we should allow plain t-shirts and v-necks that aren't low cut or "form fitting". "Form fitting" is a phrase the female students have heard a lot. As young ladies, we are told that are clothing should not be too form fitting because it could be a distraction. It seems the school does not acknowledge that we are all different shapes and sizes. Not all jeans will be loose on some people. If the jeans are loose enough, and if they are they don't always fit around the waist. Someone might say to get a belt, but I personally know plenty of girls too skinny for a belt to be effective without almost cutting off  blood circulation.
In the past few years the dress code has changed from collared shirts for girls to blouses. I'm thankful personally, but I know it is still difficult to find shirts. Boys, years later, are still wearing collared shirts. It seems unfair that they have to continue to wear and buy collared shirts instead of just wearing t-shirts they already own.
I'm not saying to disregard the whole dress code system. A school needs rules and limitations but I think that certain things should be reconsidered.

Make sure to leave a comment about what you think. Thanks for reading.

Boy Soccer Game - September 04, 2015

The boys soccer team had a game on Friday, September 4, and it was a rough one. A boy from our team, Will Burch, scored a goal within the first two minutes of the game. Afterwards the Williamsburg team got more aggressive. With ten minutes left in the first half, the Warriors are winning one to zero against Williamsburg Christian. Then five minutes are left and a player from the opposing team shoots and scores. The game is now tied. Within the next two minutes another opposing player scores. The half ends a minute later.

The second half starts and there's a lot of action. The opposing team scores seven more goals within thirty minutes. It was definitely a tough game, with the final score as 9-1 the Warriors loose. Coach Parris said, "The team is a whole. They've been working hard for the past thirty days, they're getting used to each other play and they're realizing the game's more physical than they thought it would be, but they're improving."

Disney Expo 2015

Calling all Disney fanatics! There was no better place for you to get your Disney fix than the Disney Expo. This year's expo was held at the  California Anaheim Convention Center on August 14-15. According to the Daily Herald, the D23 Expo was the “ultimate fan experience." There was a wide variety of things to do and see at this year's expo. Some exciting things included special guest speakers, a vast amount of Disney booths, shopping, and some of the latest Disney games. One guest speaker that was a total surprise, was Johnny Depp! Fans were excited to see their favorite Pirates of the Caribbean star. Exclusive members also had a chance to hear some of the latest Disney info, watch special viewings of Disney movies, and more. Several new Disney movies will come out in the next few years, and many fans were excited to hear more information about them at the expo. Some of these upcoming movies include: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (December 18th 2016), The Jungle Book (April 2016), and Finding Dory (June 2016). Unfortunately, the next Disney expo is not until 2017! In the meantime, Disney will have plenty of new, exciting things.

Hometown Hero

Former local football star Tyrod Taylor, has now been named the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. Taylor attended Hampton High School and was a star in football, basketball and track, finishing his high school football career with a 34-4 record. He played quarterback, safety and kick returner. When Taylor graduated in 2007, ESPN ranked him the as the number 3 quarterback in the nation.  Taylor chose to further his career at the # 9 ranked football school in the nation, Virginia Tech located in Blacksburg, Va.

Taylor had a fantastic collegiate career at Tech. He finished with a school record of 24 touchdowns and 2743 yards in his 2010 ACC player of the year campaign. He also holds Virginia Tech all-time records of most total yards, most total touchdowns and most quarterback rushing yards.

Tyrod Taylor was the 180th overall pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2011. After being traded in 2014 Taylor won a 3-way battle for the Buffalo Bills. He, Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel were given playing time throughout 4 preseason games to see who was the best fit. After outperforming his competitors Tyrod was given the starting job, while Manuel was chosen as the backup and Matt Cassel was cut. Tyrod Taylor will start in the Bills first game against the Indianapolis colts on Sunday September 13th. It looks like Tyrod was “Taylor-made” for this job.

New Home, New Hope

What if everyone in a community came together to help a man in need? What if that community was willing to work for just the sole motive of helping another in need? The what if turned into reality, when sailors and neighbors came to help out Nick Salter.

Naval Petty Officer Nick Salter has stage four skin cancer that has gotten progressively worse since 2007. His family supports him as much as they can, but with two mortgages and the medical bills, a foreclosure would have been the last straw to a humongous pile. Salter's family has been trying to sell their Chesapeake house for the last five months, but due to jobs and appointments, keeping the house 'Home and Garden' pretty has been on the back burner. His friends and fellow sailors went to the house and began the house transformation. WAVY TV 10 conducted an interview with Salter and the volunteers on August 25. The incredible thing is that a couple weeks later, WAVY 10 conducted another interview on September 10. The reporters found out that volunteers have flocked to the house and yard, "at one point almost 200 volunteers." Roofing and painting companies have also responded by giving free service. An entire community full of kind people and businesses found the motivation to help one in need, and the need is still being met.
