Would I Live on Mars?

If I had a chance to go to Mars, I would not.

Recently, NASA announced a suprising discovery on Mars. Rovers on the close planet picked up images that showed the possibility of water on the previously thought barren planet. This discovery has sparked a whole new round of debates. With water comes the possibility of a colony to Mars. This begs the question, if given the opportunity would you go to Mars? My answer: Heck no! There are so many reasons why I wouldn’t go to Mars. If I wrote them all dowm, this would turn into a book, so, for your conveince, here are five reasons why Mars is not for me.

1. No Way Back

One of the biggest reasons why I wouldn’t go to Mars is the permanent feel of the whole thing. This isn’t a simple move to another state, it’s a move to a whole other planet! Why would I give up my life on Earth to go somewhere where I have no idea what could happen?

2. Oh, only possible death

No human has ever been to Mars before. Even with the possibility of water on the planet, it still doesn’t get rid of all the risks. I’d rather not be a guinea pig, please.

3. Entropy (loss of muscle)

Now I love laying around as much as anyone. But, when you go to Mars your bones and muscle will start to deteriorate and after a while your body while not be able to cope with normal Earth conditions.

4. No More Internet

Now I admit, this reason is more about comfort. But, I still really don’t want to give up my internet. This would mean no Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other site that I love.

5. What About Candy??

Again, this reason could be seen as a little bit selfish. But, I think that food really is a life or death situation. Space food is cool for a while, but for the rest of my life? Even if we were able to grow crops, I feel like I would get sick of vegetables, really, really, quickly.

These are my five reasons for not wanting to go to Mars.

HCA Warriors vs. Richmond Christian

This Thursday, October 15th, our Boys Varsity Soccer team played against Richmond Christian. The Warriors started out strong, scoring within ten minutes of the first half. They continued to push hard but were overtaken with Richmond Christian finishing the half with three goals.

Beginning the second half, the Warriors pushed harder, scoring again in the first ten minutes.

The rest of the half was a battle, with both teams playing extremely rough. While the Warriors fought hard, Richmond scored within the last ten minutes, securing the game.  Even though they lost, our team fought extremely hard.

Song of the Week: "March to the Sea" by Twenty One Pilots

Let’s be honest. Christian music has a tendency to be, frankly, pretty boring. We’re stuck with two options: slow soulful music, or TobyMac. As normal teenagers with opinions and our own thoughts;  those two choices don’t really appeal to us and we have a tendency to shun the label of “Christian.” This weekly post is here to prove that Christian music can be so much more.

The song of the week is by popular alternative duo: Twenty One Pilots. While not a Christian band, these two are very outspoken in their Christian faith, which translates very well into their music. Taken from their first ever album, "March to the Sea" is a soft calming, and melodic tune overlaid with spoken word type lyrics. The song uses dedicated imagery to compare living life on earth to a "March to the Sea, " and show what happens when Jesus comes along.  

Military Helicopter Crash

On Sunday morning, a helicopter crashed in Afghanistan, killing five NATO service members and injuring five others. According to reports from Afghanistan’s capital officials, two Americans service members were among the five killed in the incident.

Sunday’s crash comes less than two weeks after six U.S. airmen died when their C-130 transport plane came down while taking off in Afghanistan. An Afghan security guard who witnessed Sunday’s crash told The Associated Press that the helicopter struck a monitoring balloon as it was landing. “It seemed like the cable was turned around the helicopter rotor,” the security guard, Najibullah, said. After the helicopter went down, all he could see was black smoke. With this incident and many occuring like it, remember to keep our armed forces and their families in your prayers and hearts.

Fall Festivals

This October, several Fall Festivals are occurring throughout Hampton Roads. The entire area will be full of pumpkin gatherings, hay rides, pumpkin spice drinks, and the overall abundance of ORANGE. But before we discuss the many fun options, have you ever thought about what a fall festival really is? Who decided pumpkins would be the fruit of October? Fall Festivals are actually reminiscent of actual harvest times. The funny thing about harvest time is that a lot of countries have crops, but because of climate and placement on Earth, no one has the exact same harvest time. So why do so many countries have something during the fall? It’s partly due to the fact that fall festivals align themselves with the autumn equinox, “the the time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth.” Harvest festivals and autumn equinox often go hand in hand, and the traditions of one are often intermixed with the other. One of those traditions is pumpkin carving. Pumpkins are indigenous to North America; however, and it was not until Irish immigrants came over to America that pumpkin carving began. Pumpkin carving actually began as turnip and potato carving, so when the immigrants came over, they kept the tradition alive with pumpkins instead.While we certainly have changed some traditions, others have been reinvented and kept alive even to this day.  Now you know! On to the fun events this month.

October 16 and 17 - Military Family Fun Festival

This event will be dedicated to military families at Virginia Beach. Fun times will be had by brave people who try the mechanical bull, and kids get to enjoy petting zoos and tummy-ache-inducing cotton candy. Also on the

October 17 - Great Dismal Swamp Fall Festival

Here, guided tours on the nature trails during the day will lead into archery and crafts at nights

October 24- Fall Bazaar

Located in Portsmouth, this fun festival will be filled to the brim with handmade clothing, accessories, and trinkets; all sold right next to fried funnel cakes and pumpkins
